OVERVIEW
The Aidi or Chien de l'Atlas is a Moroccan dog breed used as livestock guardian, protecting herds of sheep and goats. Also possesses hunting capabilities and good scenting ability. In his native Morocco is often paired in hunting with the Sloughi, which chases his prey the Aidi has located by scent.
The Aidi is recognized as coming from Morocco, probably originating in the Sahara. The dog has never worked as a sheepdog even though the 1963 standard was published under the name Atlas Sheepdog, which was corrected in 1969. A courageous dog, the Aidi lived and worked in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Libya, Algeria and protect its owner and property wildcats, other predators, and aliens.
This breed has also been called the Berber, after the Berber tribes who use it, and bears some resemblance to the pariah dog believed to share its ancestry. As protector of the nomadic desert tribes, dogs are more alert and aggressive bet around the perimeter of the camp at night. The Aidi has not been highly regarded by the tribes historically, like most dogs other than the Sloughi and other breeds regarded as noble. However, the Moroccans have recently formed a club to protect the purity of the breed that has contributed so much in so many roles, as protector, hunter, police dog, and pet.Despite the Aidi has been used primarily as a working dog, it has become more common as a dog house in the country. This breed also has a good urban pet if given tasks and exercise enough to keep you satisfied and happy.In the work of guard of honor and the herd that share many of the characteristics of many Mountain dog breeds.
COAT
Thick and rather harsh except on the face and ears where it is short and fine. Moderate length on the body, with a distinct mane, especially in males, and long breeches and tail plume.
CHARACTERISTIC
Always alert and very instinctive in assessing the threat of danger, the Atlas dog has inherent guarding and protective behavior. The breed is very docile and affectionate with its family.
